After two years of finishing in 4th place, the famous AC Cobra “GPG 4C” came home in 3rd place closely behind the rapid AC Cobra of David Hart, Rob Hall andJeroen Bleekemolen and the winning GT40 of Shaun Lynn and Andrew Haddon.

Olly Bryant qualified the car 4th on the 100 car grid after a blistering lap of 2min50s to out-qualify 4 of the 7 GT40’s and all of the other AC Cobras.

Grahame Bryant started the race and lost ground initially before settling into a good rhythm and hanging onto the back of the David Hart Cobra, being started by Rob Hall. It was decided to pit Grahame at just over the 90-minute mark in order to avoid the lengthy queues at the fuel pumps that cost the car so much time the previous year. Just before the end of his stint, a Corvette blew up depositing its oil onto the circuit. Grahame spun on this oil and the cobra went into the gravel at Stavelot, fortunately he was able to drive out and only lose 35 seconds.

BRITISH GT ROUND 12 – SILVERSTONE
August 17th, 2009

Fastest lap and strong podium challenge for Barwell at Silverstone

british_gt_round12 (2)

Barwell Motorsport featured strongly in the battle for honours during the latest round of the British GT Championship at Silverstone last weekend. Both the Aston Martin DBRS9 of Andrew Howard/Jamie Smyth and the Ginetta G50Z of Olly Bryant/Piers Johnson challenged for podium finishes on their way to eventual 5th and 6th places respectively, and Olly claimed the overall fastest lap of the race during his stint.

Race – Sunday, 2-Hours (82 laps)

The 2-hour British GT races feature re-fuelling and tyre changes for the teams, although this would be water off a duck’s back for the well-drilled Barwell crew, coming fresh from doing 23 such pit stops at the Spa 24 Hours! Despite the longer distance race, the action all the way through the British GT grid was pretty hectic from the green light. Andrew was starting the Beechdean Ice Cream-backed Aston Martin and immediately started to hound the Ford GT of Philip Walker for sixth place. The Ford man succumbed to Andrew’s challenge on lap four, and the charging Howard then immediately demoted the Ferrari of Phil Burton to claim fifth spot on the next lap.

BRITISH GT ROUNDS 9 & 10 – SNETTERTON
July 6th, 2009

Barwell Ginetta-Zytek takes third outright British GT win at Snetterton

The Barwell Motorsport British GT squad brought our win tally up to 3 victories out of 8 races contested so far this season, with the Ginetta G50Z scoring no.3 in Sunday’s encounter at Snetterton with drivers Olly Bryant and Piers Johnson.

Race 1 – Saturday, 1-Hour (50 laps)

For most of Saturday’s 50-lap encounter, four cars were locked in a fascinating battle of wills for the overall race victory. These included the Mosler of Brown/Short, the Ascari of the Jones twins, the Ferrari of Cameron/Wilds and the Barwell G50Z of Piers and Olly. The Mosler and Ascari had put the faster driver of their pairings in for the first stint, whilst the Ferrari and Ginetta both had the slower one, resulting in the first two cars building up a handy advantage in the first half of the race. So initially at the front it was Mosler just ahead of Ascari, and then an increasing gap back to Piers and Cameron.

Rounds 5&6 30/31st May 2009 Rockingham - 'Double outright win for Olly Bryant'

After the disappointment of electrical issues at Spa, Olly Bryant was looking for a decent result at Rockingham. This time Olly was sharing the Ginetta G50 Zytek with former Ginetta G50 GT4 class winner Joe Osborne.

Friday saw further improvements made to the car’s handling on the Avon tyres and some improvements had to be made to the fueling system after the issues at Spa. Olly spent the first few laps bedding brakes and then the session was red flagged. Joe then spent session two getting used to the car.

Qualifying for race one saw Joe set a rapid lap of 1m22.4s to secure pole position. The car’s engine died on Joe’s second flying lapped as the fuel pressure cut. Joe was able to restart the car and limp back to the pits. This was the end of qualifying for Joe but his time was good enough and he held pole from the second place Mosler of Dan Brown. As there was no time to investigate the problem before the second qualifying session, Olly had to hope the temperamental fuel pressure problem did not re-occur!
